He wrote, “No research evidence has validated the teaching of any lifting technique as a means of reducing back damage. At the present time, teaching of techniques should be regarded as mythology, as displacement activity taking effort away from effective methods” and called for greater attention to reducing the load on the lumbar disc by “reducing the bending moment on the back” and the need to also take various personal factors into account in each case. He suggested that “Teaching principles of lifting in terms of limiting the bending moment of the spine and bending the knees could [n.b. “could”] be justified”.
