Firstly, we must always remember that an injured worker did not come to work to get injured. Therefore, it is imperative that this be understood by all managers and insurers. The trauma of not being able to go back to work even for a short time is very worrying and affects people abilities in other matters.
Trauma sufferers they become and much is put on getting the injured back to work. However, many companies use this as a reason to lay off staff- take the recent examples at Toyota and QANTAS.
But the insurers have much to blame for as well. Have you ever heard an insurer volunteer workers rights to have a lawyer at little or no cost, or home help, or a taxi to and from an appointment, a carer. No!
When a person becomes injured he/she needs 3 things immediately- the GP to dispel the myth that the injury is a fake, a lawyer who knows work cover backwards and a social worker. But no injured person is told this- it is fend for yourself and the VWA or WORKSAFE need to ensure the injured persons are fully informed.
This also means giving every assistance to those wanting or able to return on a part time basis. Some insurers use the adage that if injured persons cant get back to their full capacity then we shall sack them. That is not treating the person with any dignity at all.
Being an injured person is very difficult and it is about time all insurers/companies/governments understood the return to work programs better- dont use them as an excuse to violate a persons dignity by sacking them down the line. remember many of these people have years of experience and could be used to mentor new workers if only they were given the opportunity to train.

But if one is going to continue looking at the bad side without trying to do something productive instead to make the situation in his or her favor, it will only be detrimental to the worker. Try to take advantage of the flexibility casual work offers.
