I propose a different metric for measuring OHS performance, a very simple one that everyone understands, that is to place a dollar value on each incident.

The cost of loss of production is known, the cost of lost time is known, the cost of Return to Work matters is determined by actual costs. When incidents are accounted for in this way, the damage to the bottom line is immediately obvious. This gets the attention of those managers who may be ambivalent about safety matters.

Another advantage of attaching a dollar value is that when resources are limited (pretty much all the time), it can be seen what type of incidents to concentrate on to obtain best value for the safety budget, (if indeed there is one, that\’s a discussion for another day). People ought not to be running around worrying about bumps and bruises while serious injuries (and fatalities) are happening.

Regards
Peter Robinson
