I worry that WHS education in this country has always focussed on “getting answers” and this has delivered the classical “police” role that WHS professionals end up fulfilling.
The challenge, as you have eloquently stated:
“… part of that responsibility is that one must “get comfortable with not knowing and not understanding and feeling a bit lost”; the understanding that” there are no [definitive] answers” only knowledge and advice that should lead to a decision, the closest to an answer that employers can get. It is part of the role of the OHS adviser to ensure that the decision made is based on as sound information as possible, even if that information is incomplete or subjective.”
