OHS has come a long way and the cost to the employer when they fail their duties as regards health and safety can be very bad, from financial to publicity. It pays to get you house in order, if you can’t afford a safety dept then you could hire in help or use health and safety training videos.

OHS is not a joke only if upper management is dedicated to a safe workplace and does not put safety over production.
I have worked in the underground mining industry since 1970 and have seen amazing improvements in the safety culture, BUT there are some contract project managers who will do any thing no matter how dangerous to get the job done.
I quit my $140000 job as an underground supervisor with one of these companies last year because of my concerns with the way they thought of safety and have not been able to get a job since, I think I may have been blackballed but it is worth it, if I can save one person from injury I am happy.
I have lost a few friends over my lifetime in the mining industry and I will do every thing in my power to make sure that I do not lose any more, there is no full stop on my comment because as far as I am comcerned it is not finished
